Living the Restaurant Drama VicariouslyYes, I quit the job a few weeks ago, but one of my best friends is still employed as a server there, God love her. So I've never been out of the loop as far as the goings-on...but what happened to her this past weekend is unbelievable. It all started when she was having a bad day as far as personal issues, and had to put it all aside in order to smile at dumbass customers and feed their fat, lazy asses. She ended up having a horrible night - bad customers, no help from coworkers, etc. Her last table was extremely rude, and when she was trying to get help from another server, she referred to them as "bitches". Apparently they overheard, though she thought she was being quiet enough about it. Not smart, but somewhat understandable. You'd think she would be written up for swearing within earshot of customers (they even heard a manager drop the f-bomb while I was working there), and they could tell the customer she was referring to someone else. Since she's never been in trouble for something like that before, that's sufficient, right? Wrong, apparently. They made her quit for the evening right then and there. They gave her tables away (including one that was just waiting to pay a bill and leave, and they had to wait for 15 minutes or so just to do that because they were transferring it to another server) and made her cash out and go home, and suspended her until today. This was Friday night. Her rent is due today and she was counting on working Mother's Day - the busiest day of the year - in order to take care of that. She tried explaining that to the manager, who said, "Not my problem." She's now in danger of being evicted. Worse yet, she was "suspended" - the idea being that she would have the weekend off before talking to the GM today. But apparently, the same manager who suspended her felt the need to give away all of her shifts for THIS WEEK. She was also telling other servers that she got into a fight with a customer and walked out - neither of which is true. She had NO contact with her customers after they overheard her; they went directly to a manager. Nor did she walk out, obviously; they asked her to leave and she turned in her money. Not to mention how WRONG it is for a manager to be discussing issues with other employees, though I believe it. The same woman did the same thing to me when I got written up for a minor infraction - the rest of the day I had had to deal with nosey-ass servers coming up to me asking, "So what's up with the....?" I told her to at least hang in there and meet with the GM and be civil. It looks like they're either trying to make her quit or make it look like she quit, but she needs to have the right to unemployment now. She's also calling corporate. Still, though, even though I don't work there, that's the worst thing that has happened so far....and I am PISSED OFF about it! Email me with the restaurant phone number and your friend's name. My friends and I will cover them with complaints because our favorite server wasn't there this weekend and we aren't coming back until that sweet, smart, funny, fast, efficent girl is back. Seriously. We will make them beg her to go back out on the floor. sadblubra@yahoo.com |
