You can't always get what you want

This is just getting frustrating. It seems like I'm qualified - perfectly qualified, without even having to stretch the resume - for a number of jobs. Yet all I get offered are low-paying jobs that don't require a degree. I was reading through my blog (not here, my other blog) and two years ago I interviewed for a job that would have matched my skills and interests perfectly and I demonstrated as much. They even mentioned Spanish and video production as two things they usually had to outsource, but things that I can do, and asked if I would be interested in taking those on. Absolutely! I sent them a follow-up letter that even expanded on some things I had mentioned in the interview. Didn't get it. That's how it always goes.

I just talked to a guy on the phone - a friend of someone I go to school with - who is hiring people for a medical alert call center. It actually sounds interesting to me. It's a bilingual position but he works with people on their Spanish (which is great since mine is rusty), and the way he was talking about his employees and how he's flexible with people and their lives and schedules was great. I've interviewed and worked for enough selfish douchebags to get a good idea of when I'm talking to a good boss. That's valuable. But the pay is crap. I have a degree, I have $4k worth of credit card debt and I drive a 12-year-old car that's pushing 200k in mileage. It's a good car but God knows how much longer it'll last and I don't have money saved up to replace it. Basically, taking this job would require me to forget about those two things but have enough money for the basics.

But yet I have to take it because I'm just not getting the jobs I'm qualified for that pay well. (I'm not even talking REALLY well. I'm talking $30k would kick ass.) I'll probably be happy with the job but not able to get on with my life financially.

I've done all I can do to get what I want out of a job. Why can't I just have it???
