Worthless...Once a week, I sit down with my boss for a review of my performance. In my industry, that's normal. I have no problem doing it. However, I do have a problem with my boss writing emails, taking phone calls from friends, and generally not pay attention during out review session. He projects that he doesn't really care how I'm doing, and he isn't committed to me becoming my best at what I do. Granted, our meeting is only about 15 minutes. But it's 15 minutes of pure hell. He makes me feel inadequate, no matter how well I'm doing, and offers no constructive criticism whatsoever. Without giving away what I do for a living, the job I have is one that not many people have. It takes a certain talent that not everyone has, and you're constantly refining your craft. And, as with almost any profession, every employee is different. I'm different than the other people I work with, and any moron can figure that out with a little common sense. But my boss CONSTANTLY makes me feel like I need to not be myself, but I should be like one of my female co-workers (I'm a dude). In my profession, it's easy to tell when I'm not being myself. So he's basically giving me terrible advice everytime we sit down for our little meeting. This is, honestly, the only constant I hate about my job. Sure, some of my co-workers are stupid and bitchy, but they have no real bearing on my work. My boss, because he tells me what I'm doing wrong and what I should be doing, has everything to do with my job and my performance. IF he knew what he was talking about, this wouldn't be a problem. Please know this: We have been trained to look for others to give us our value. This is problematic. Don't worry about what this person thinks of you. Do the best job possible and if he acts like a jerk during your performance report, simply ignore it if possible. It is your responsibility to become the best at what you do and perhaps you're already outshining him which is why he desires to demotivate you. Are you listening to the feedback your boss is giving you? Write it down and see if there is anything at all to learn from it. Good luck! |
