Savvy smartpantsIf you work for a firm that puts business attire high on its agenda, then you are not alone. Most audit/accountant firms like the one I work for are sticklers for appearance. The big plus point of being in such a firm is that you can earn merits with the least effort. Take a look at your boss or immediate senior and if they wear shirts with French cuffs and cufflinks, do the same. Invest in a collection of assorted neckties and rotate daily – a boldly striped tie can avert attention from your ageing pinstripe and is cheaper than a suit. Globalization has pushed the price of such items of male vanity down to levels affordable by juniors like you and me. A few extra minutes in the morning expended on preening can make all the difference and can last all day. It’s very easy and does wonders, at least in the firm I work for. An impeccable facade can act as a buffer for any small misdemeanors you do – coming in late, getting caught browsing the net on company time, sending the wrong email to the wrong client – letting you get away with more that the sloppy dresser does. You also get to meet more clients since your appearance is suitable for such meetings and enhances the firm’s image. Some of your male colleagues might not like it (envy) especially if they’re younger and/or richer, but you’ll find that eventually they’ll start doing the same: this will give you the added satisfaction of being a fashion leader too. The above also applies equally to women with the advantage that it is far easier for ladies to keep a good appearance since they have more grooming material at their disposal. The bottom line is, your chances for promotion and a raise improve and even if you are professionally incompetent, you do it in style. |
