This job is for you

Whenever you see job postings you can bet that they are as fictitious and devious as any type of advertising. What makes them even worse is the fact that the firms that put them on pride themselves with being ethical and professional. Case in point is the adverts that used to interest me most – those for positions in accounting departments at auditors or financial service firms. The promises are many; career prospects, work-life balance, options to work overseas, gain experience, support advancement, unleashing your potential. Let me dissect them and then they can be seen in their true ugliness.

Career prospects – only within the firm because if you leave you can bet your career is ruined.
Work-life balance – your work is your life and as it piles up, more of your life is used up to balance your workload.
Options to work overseas – only for the chosen few.
Gain experience – not necessarily good experience though you are led to believe so.
Support advancement – but you pay for it by becoming a virtual slave.
Unleashing your potential – finding the best in you and squeezing you dry for it.

If firms could be sued for this type of con advertising, there wouldn’t be enough lawyers to handle all the cases.
