Ever had a manager with a rotten habit? Ever had a manager with a rotten attitude? One of my former managers in an accounting firm had both – two loathsome traits embodied in one scrawny bonehead. There we were, four juniors working in the same, ill-ventilated office with our manager sitting in glass walled cubicle; we could see him and he could see us. At odd times during the day, but mostly during lunch break, he would kick off his shoes and put his feet up on his desk. It was a time of intensive work and sometimes, we had to stay in during our break to make deadlines. At first it was just a distraction until we got used to it but if we had to go to his enclosure and speak to him, he would keep his shoe-less feet on the desk. At times, he would be taking a call and we would have to suffer the torture of sitting in a stuffy cubicle facing the manager while trying not to gag on his socks. If this habit was annoying, his attitude was even worse. This was the type of guy who would even boss the clients so imagine what he did to us poor subordinates. Clients would complain about this and some took their business elsewhere because of him. With these attributes, the company should have got rid of him, right? Actually, he was promoted to partner! That got him out of our office but, obviously, it made him even more self-important and bossy than ever.
