Passed overSo, I was recently passed over for a promotion/raise because I don't have past experience as a department director. That logic would be perfectly fine, except for the fact that for over 2 years, whenever the departing director was gone, I filled in, very capably, and to some, did better work than the department director. But, that isn't good enough to get me the job. My interview was awful. My bosses concentrated on my lack of director experience, and ignored my skills, relationship with co-workers, and work ethic. They pointed out that "nothing has changed" since I interviewed for it the first time, 8 months ago. However, even though I disagree with them, I understand their logic. Here's what I don't understand... My boss told me I should stay a few hours later than I normally do to "make myself seen" and "help out." What this means is I'm expected to go around to everyone in the office, asking if I can do their work for them. This also equates to a 9 and a half hour day with no lunch hour. (In my line of work, you eat whenever; no real lunch hour exists.) I am the only person in the building expected to do this. I normally work 7 and a half hours, which is more than some other people. But, those other people have been working here longer, and are friends with management. I won't receive any extra pay or benefits, and I'll be late getting to my second job. If that weren't enough, I'm expected to be sort of an interim director until the position is filled. That means I have to do all of my work, plus the work of the director, with no extra pay or benefits. Also, once they hire a new person to fill the soon-to-be vacant director position, I'll be the one to train them, because I'm the only person who knows anything about the department. Yet, I'm not good enough to be the director. It's a total slap in the face, and they don't get it. The departing director was hired 8 months ago and is already leaving. I interviewed for the position then, and again this time, only to be told "You don't have the experience we're looking for." If the new person leaves while I still work here, I won't be interviewing a third time; nothing will have changed. Oh, you have the experience, obviously, you probably just seem too honest and hard working. Or just don't fit the already decided hard profile. I have been there my friend. Started something, worked hard at it for a year or so, built on it, only to have someone else come in to "help" me, be totally trained by me (iodit that I was), then made my manager. Then over time, to gradually use all I had stupidly shared (professionally and personally) to make my life a living fucking hell for nearly three years. Thats theft. Theft of time and effort and sweat. And condoned by the people who made it so. The people you trusted and sweated for in the first place with the proverbial carrot swinging endlessly in front of you. Yep, it smarts. And you never, ever forget it. Even when you rise above it and succeed, because those wasted years of getting shystered out of something you truly deserved can never be regained. The income you should have had but didn't for your hard work. I have often tried to analyse exactly why that happened. It is for several reasons. They have a profile in mind before they even post the position, and yours doesn't fit for them, before they even post it, or they would have promoted you from within like they damn well should have already. When I look back now, I should have got out. At the very first hint of the bullshit ass screwing to come, I should have walked out. I didn't. But if I had to do it all over again, I would leave. I would leave at the first whiff of this shit and go on unemployment insurance or go temp or sell pencils for that matter. I would have survived and with my pride intact. I lost something. Something I am still trying to get back. Thats what happens. |
